In which mining is discussed

Now Listening: Merle Haggard – Movin’ On
Mood: Inquisitive

I am doing something I never thought I would be doing again. Music mining.

What is that? Well, I’m sure all of you are guilty of that in some way. You’re looking for a certain music file, and you look for it on a mp3 directory, say, mp3skull, and you find all of these delicious places where the song might be, but you don’t know if they are, so you click the link they have to download.

If you’re lucky, the music plays, and you can get the song you are looking for. Yay, you got it. Do you move on and huff kittens? Of course not. You make a bit of copypasta magic and see if you can get into the website directory where the file came from. Usually it is some ‘old’ website from the mid-naught decade, and, therefore, you can mine the directory with some kind of impunity. If not, you can get them from the website itself, usually as some sort of embedded link with a little ‘download’ button, and you can get to see an interesting website with weird coding or even weirder commentary going with the music link.

Most of the time, though, you have some kind of mp3 sub-directory so you can leave the rest of the place alone and instead figure out why anyone would have the complete discog of Madonna on their website. Or why they have Simon & Garfunkle’s ‘Sound of Silence’ under a folder titled ‘Songs to Get High To’. Though, I do have to say, ‘Sound of Silence’ is an excellent song to get high with, either drinking or toking. I have that on the highest of authorities.

Anyway, the habit kind of died out when I found out many places I mined were deleted due to the Geocities Destruction of ’09. Thousands of directories gone, kaput. Including my own — before I moved to LiveJournal, I had a weird-looking Geocities website with HTML buttons and frames(!) where I had a journal and other crazy stuff. That is another entry, to be sure.

So, today, while trying to find an obscure groove/lounge song, I found myself with a list of various directory links, most not working, but a few that did. Many of the directories had (blech) hip-hop and rap songs, but others had a wide eclectic mix. One of them I’m currently ‘mining’ as I type has no reachable directory, but the website is a fascinating mix of commentary from six? seven? different people where each entry has an equally fascinating song to go with it.

And that is the beauty of music mining. It’s a bit like StumbleUpon, and you might land yourself in a pit where people slur Bush to the midi-tune of Disney’s “It’s A Small World After All”, but in the most part you end in a small part of the internet where it is downright fascinating.

P.S. I found the song.

*purrs*

If moose could purr, that is. Heh.

The New Year is slow, but it is very early still. The year is quite infantile in its way. But it was alright.

Today, was the first Market Days of the year in Harlingen, and I, of course, went.

I also knitted.

The Boneyard is doing fine, if a bit too tedious on the needles.

And apparently it is to be bigger than this. I’m shivering with delight. Or would if I had a 40-inch US10.5. I’m running out of space on the needles I have already! X.X

And I found some nifty tunage.

119_2287

It isn’t everyday that I actually get CDs *coughcough* but when I find them I get good ones. To me, that is.

So, when I got home, I found a package that Mom picked up. I opened it and found a new friend.

A cuddly moose plush! I should make a collection of them. ๐Ÿ˜€ Anyway, this was a gift from a good online friend of mine. I cannot thank him enough. Well, I can, but I need another stamp…

Martini Lounging!

Standard

Those who have followed me from LiveJournal should remember the first time I posted a web-mixtape. A mixtape unlike any other. One with stopgap flows and strange melodies.

Then I posted it to 8Tracks.

After that, I tweaked my other one at the time, Return to the Martini Lounge and posted it up as well.

This past week, I set up the third part, Revenge of the Martini Lounge. More jazzy than usual, but it has its quirks.

Then I realized that I usually post download links to them.

If you are so inclined to get them, feel free, shake yourself a martini (or a Mai Tai) and enjoy the kitschy tunage. Or if you want to give them a listen, just get on the 8Tracks links and give them a test drive. Either way, I am sure you will enjoy them. ๐Ÿ˜€

I haz a hat!

Anywho, I got this from one of the local rummage stores, and it looks not even worn. I do need a haircut though.

I also found these.

After finding Uncle T. through Pandora, I have been looking for their albums, and we all know the thing with Pizzicato Five. <insert fanboy squeal> I got these cheap, considering they were unopened. And they are rather collectable. ๐Ÿ˜€

Whoo!

Standard

First off, to y’all Canadians there, happy Canada Day. Wheeeeeee!!!

*cough*

Secondly, to start the month of July, allow me to give ya some songs that are catchy and perfect for driving to the beach. Think of the group as a mini-mix, k? ๐Ÿ˜‰

1) Presidents of the United States of America – Volcano
2) The Incredible Moses Leroy – Beep Beep Love
3) Elekibass – All The People Come, Lets Get Down
4) Fantastic Plastic Machine – MPF (Mezzo Pianoforte)

Enjoy!

Has there ever been an album that brings tears to your eyes because A) the music is that cool or B) it just fits with you and you wondered why in the world you didn’t hear it before? Well, I have found one. From a very unlikely source.

Jimmy Buffet.

Yesterday, Mom saw an Emeril show in which he starred in it. She told me to look for his latest album, “Take The Weather With You”, which I did, and, given my habit of listening to anything I download, I gave it a test spin.

Oh goodness, this album resonates so well with me. From technological complaints to parties in Memphis, this is just one of the best things I have heard in a while.. I will have to thank Mom for giving me this suggestion.

For you tasters of music, like me: Jimmy Buffett: Party At The End Of The World

The Crazy Insanity of Everyone Involved

Standard

Crazy Insanity.

Nonono, not that sort.

I mean, crazy shit.

Like new music and David Chapelle/Naruto mashups. Crazy stuff.

Found out that the other MamaCat, aka MamaCat2 [The Return!!], got her kittens under the old broken recliner in the garage. All of them are wandering about, looking at the surroundings. One of them is this smoky blue-grey kitten that, with love and care, would grow into something exceptionally beautiful. I’ll see if we can turn her/him into an Indoor Kitteh. I hope so.

*yawn*

Found a few torrents of rare musics and strange tunes. Like Steve Greenburg: Big Bruce, a song that wouldn’t fit out of place in a Dr. Demento album. Or in the Jukebox From Heck [one of the extinct oldies stations had that every night, played strange and wacky music].

Hope your night went well.

Musical Hijinks ftw!

Standard

One of the places that I hunt for new music [or music that I lost during the ol’ 40gig went kaput] posted a huge block of country, all from the same site. So, I’m like, ‘okay, copy/paste the main link and see what comes out’.

Do that, and I’m seeing this list of musical albums. Cardigains! Zero 7! And…*gasp!*…Fantastic Plastic Machine.

Must take everything! Which I did…well, some. Skipped over the albums I had, but got a few new things, like Stereolab.

I’m willing to take a listen to anything. If I like, it’s added to my list of musical preferances, which is plenty.

I once did an entry on musical tastes, can be read here.

Oh dear…

Standard

5,435 songs.

27.6 gigs of music.

Seventeen disks of backup [about half are DVD-roms].

Lots of various stuff.

And is only on the folder marked “Joey’s Mix”! I have two other folders to catagorize and backup!

And another compilation [not another Martini Lounge mix, alas] is soon on the way!

No wonder I have no more room on the computer anymore. :\

oh wow…

Standard

So, through LJ I got the [early] release of Modest Mouse’s We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank.

Wow.

I’m impressed. It’s not everyday that that happens. [It’s usually every other week, but still…]

*makes note to buy the album when it comes out*
